Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Convocation President Dr Lunga Mantashe has described the killing of final-year student Sisonke Mbolekwa as an “immeasurable loss” to both the victim’s family and the broader university community.

Speaking on the sidelines of Mbolekwa’s emotional funeral in Masakala village outside Matatiele on Saturday, Mantashe emphasised the profound impact of the loss.

Mbolekwa was shot and killed, while two other students sustained injuries during a protest at the university’s Mthatha campus. The suspect in the shooting incident is the Walter Sisulu residence manager.

Dr. Mantashe says this ordeal could have been prevented. “The family was dependent on this gentleman to finish up this year and take care of his family in the coming future, hopefully to get employment and to undo the situation that is socio-economic in nature. It is very sad that his life was stopped short and what makes it even more sad is that this happened inside a place of learning, where it should have been a gun-free place.”
