Gauteng police have arrested more than 1 000 suspects in Eldorado Park south of Johannesburg overnight in a police operation dubbed Shanela.
Amongst those arrested are suspects wanted for gender-based violence, drug dealing and possession of unlicensed firearms.
Twelve illegal immigrants were also arrested during a roadblock on the Golden Highway this morning.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni says, “We are here as a norm. We start with suspect raiding and from yesterday up to this morning with our detectives we managed to arrest about 1050 with 220 cases for gender-based violence and we are on the second phase here as you can see and we are hard at work and the second phase, one would say we managed to arrest 12 illegal immigrants.”
