A crime scene has been cordoned off crime scene.
One armed suspect has been fatally shot, and several others wounded during a shootout with police in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg Thursday morning.
According to police, the suspects had planned an ATM bombing in the area this morning.
The operation forms part of efforts to curb the recent surge in cash-in-transit heists and ATM bombings in Gauteng and neighboring provinces.

Major General Nonkululeko Phokane explains, “A crime intelligence operation led by the South African Police Services together with other law enforcement agencies including the SAPS tactical response unit and the JMPD received information in the early hours of this morning. At the scene, a shootout ensued, and one suspect is deceased, four are arrested, two others are hospitalised and five others are still on the run.”
Meanwhile, in the Western Cape, a man has been gunned down in a suspected gang-related shooting in Mitchells Plain on the Cape Flats.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk says a 13-year-old was wounded and was taken to hospital. He says no arrests have been made as yet.
“According to reports, an unidentified person came to the mentioned address and called the deceased from outside the Wendy house by his name. When the deceased opened the curtain, the suspect started to shoot at him, fatally wounding him. The injured victim was sleeping when he was shot in the right arm.”
