Malls in the west of Durban have also borne the brunt of the destructive overnight rains. At least one person is confirmed to have died when her car washed away in Pinetown last night.
The level 6 warning for the province’s coastal towns remains relevant today with more rains expected.

Lerissa Govender, a clothing store owner at the Kloof Village Mall says, “There is so much of damage that has happened and we are going to have a loss of trade today because we are unable to trade today. Thankfully, we are trying to extract the water at the moment, however, there’s a lot of damage. My system is not functioning. After we drain all the water we can assess the damage further.”
The Mall’s management’s Candice Smith-Mayo says a handful of shops suffered water damage.
“Look, the whole lower ground floor flooded last night. There’s probably about four or five (stores) that are severely flooded but not structurally, nothing more than cosmetic and nothing that can’t be resolved or fixed. I believe that it was over 200ml (millitres) of rain that fell last night in Kloof. It was just Mother Nature took its course last night.”
