Eastern Cape police have opened a case of murder and attempted murder after a shooting incident in Gqeberha on Saturday left one person dead and another injured.
Police spokesperson Sandra Janse Van Rensburg says officers responded to a complaint in Korsten.
She says they found the driver of a vehicle had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
“It is alleged that at approximately 10:45, SAPS Algoa Park responded to a complaint at the corner of Essex Street and Kotrel Street, Korsten. On arrival they found a white Toyota LDV with one male in the driver’s seat with multiple gunshot wounds,” says Van Rensburg.
“A second victim was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound to the arm. It is further alleged that two unknown suspect/s passed the LDV and started shooting at the deceased and thereafter the suspect/s walked away. The motive and the suspects are unknown, and the investigation is ongoing,” adds Van Rensburg.
Meanwhile, the situation remains volatile at Amaoti township north of Durban after three community members were shot dead allegedly by members of a notorious gang this morning.
It is alleged that the victims were part of a community forum who were patrolling the area following the brutal murder of three community members on Sunday.
The community says the group has been terrorising them for many years and not much has been done to address the situation.
Chairperson of the Inanda Community Policing Forum, Mbongeleni Phewa explains, “People are dying here day and night; every weekend people are being killed in this area. That is why the community has come to a point where they’re saying enough. They’ve decided to get up and do something. That is why you can see the anger of the community.”
