‘Provincial govt success depends with local and national support’

Political analyst Professor Ntsikelelo Breakfast says the effectiveness of provincial governments depends on cooperation with both local and national structures. This follows State of the Province Addresses delivered by six premiers outlining economic strategies and development plans for the year.

Breakfast points to corruption in municipalities as a key factor undermining provincial governance. He highlights the Western Cape as a standout performer, attributing its success to strong municipal alignment with the provincial administration.

“The Western Cape benefits from municipalities that function effectively, likely because the same party governs both levels,” he explains.

“In other provinces, political tensions between local and provincial governments create inefficiencies, ultimately harming citizens,” adds Breakfast.
