‘70% of electricity restored after storm in Mkhondo Municipality’

The Mkhondo Local Municipality in Mpumalanga says it has successfully restored electricity supply to 70% of the area after a recent storm, that caused significant damage to the electrical infrastructure.

The storm resulted in explosions at the Gerling, Engelbrecht and Lunenburg substations.

However, the municipality’s spokesperson, Howard Vilakazi, says there are still ongoing challenges related to water supply.

Vilakazi says cables supplying electricity to a water treatment plant were stolen during the power outage in the area.

“The treatment plant is now operating at a half capacity due to cable theft affecting the water lines. We had to restart a pump. We have restarted it and water is being supplied to the reservoir. We are anticipating that during the course of today, not later than five, the power will be restored in almost all the other areas that are affected,” says Vilakazi.
