63 KZN scholar transport vehicles fail road safety inspection


63 scholar transport vehicles in KwaZulu-Natal have failed the road safety inspection.

This is according to the provincial Department of Transport.

The inspection was conducted by the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) and Operation Shanela ahead of the opening of schools on Wednesday.

The province has around 77 000 pupils using scholar transport.

The Department’s spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya explains, “A team of provincial inspectors attached to the RTI started an inspection of scholar transport fleet, a total of 198 vehicles has been inspected and 143 buses, 48 minibuses and seven mid buses. Based on the report from the RTI, a total of 63 of the fleet have failed the inspection and the breakdown is as follows: 43 buses, 18 minibuses and two mid buses. The owners of the fleet have been instructed to attend to all the mechanical failures stipulated in the contract.”
