4 000 arrested for rape and attempted rape since Oct: Gen. Masemola

Police have made almost 4 000 arrests for rape and attempted rape since October last year.

This is according to National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.

3 983 arrests were made for the crimes from October last year to the 31st of last month.

Masemola says police remain committed to apprehending perpetrators of gender-based violence and femicide.

He addressed the media in Pretoria on the police’s Safer Festive Season operations.

“Between October 2024 and December 2024, a total of 685 GBVF perpetrators were convicted by courts during this period. It’s not to say these crimes were committed between October and December. It means the cases were finalized during that period. 110 GBV perpetrators were sentenced to life imprisonment during this period, 71 perpetrators were sentenced to 20 years and above, and 330 were sentenced to up to nine years in prison.”
