An NSRI rescue boat at sea.
A 36-year-old man has drowned at Fish Hoek Beach on the Cape Peninsula in the Western Cape.
National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) Spokesperson Craig Lambinon, says that teams had been activated after reports that a man had disappeared under water after jumping from rocks.
He says that lifeguards had recovered the body and brought it to shore.
“On arrival on the scene, CMR paramedics, law enforcement and Fire and Rescue Services paramedics assisted the lifeguards continuing in extensive CPR efforts but after all efforts to resuscitate the man were exhausted, sadly he was declared deceased. The body of the man has been taken into the care of police and government Health Forensic Pathology Services. Police have opened an inquest docket. Condolences are conveyed to family and friends of the deceased man.”
Drowning at Hartbeespoort Dam
In another incident, police have opened an inquest docket after the body of an adult male was found in the Hartbeespoort Dam in North West yesterday.
The man had been reported missing while fishing yesterday.
The NSRI together with the police divers launched an extensive search and recovered the man’s body from the dam.
Meanwhile, NSRI Drowning Prevention Manager, Andrew Ingram, has cautioned beachgoers against swimming while under the influence of alcohol.
Ingram says they have witnessed tragic fatal drowning incidents during the festive season around the country where beachgoers drink alcohol and go swimming, which in some cases has led to the loss of life.
