This year marks the 35th anniversary of Nelson Mandela’s release from prison. He was released from the Victor Verster Prison on the 11th of February 1990.

The Robben Island Museum in Cape Town, together with several other stakeholders hosted a commemorative event.

The Nelson Mandela Museum is also celebrating the 25th anniversary since its establishment.

Mandela’s granddaughter, Ndileka Mandela says she hopes today’s youth learn and take something from her grandfather and all leaders who fought in the struggle.

“The legacy he left was that of servant leadership, sadly we are seeing less and less of the servant leadership within the political space, however with the youth I’m hoping they can take something, not just from him, but from the founding fathers of our democracy; Walter Sisulu, Oliver Tambo, Andrew Mlangeni, they can extrapolate what resonates with their soul.”
