3 killed, 5 injured in EC R63 pile-up


Three people have died while five are injured in a multiple-vehicle pile-up on the R63 road near Debe Nek outside Qonce, in the Eastern Cape. The provincial Transport Department says the crash happened on Tuesday.

It says two vehicles were travelling from Middledrift and the third from Qonce.

The injured were taken to Grey Hospital in Qonce.

Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and negligent driving.

The department’s spokesperson Unathi Binqose says, “We can confirm the death of these three people from this crash that happened at the R63 near Dimbaza and unfortunately, five others sustained serious injuries and were rushed to hospital in King Williams Town. We wish to extend a word of condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones in this crash, while wishing those in hospital a speedy and full recovery.”
