The Tlhabane Magistrates Court in Rustenburg, North West, has handed 31-year-old Philani Daka a 25-year prison term on two counts of murder.
He murdered his girlfriend, Lebogang Mokwena and her mother, Msesi Mokwena, in January last year, in Lefaragatha village.
Following the commission of the crime, Daka evaded arrest for months. However, the police eventually apprehended him.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in North West, Sivenathi Gunya, says Daka has been in custody ever since, and he has confessed to his crimes.
It is alleged that during the commission of the crime, Daka had an argument with his girlfriend, Lebogang, and subsequently stabbed her before turning the knife on Msesi, who had tried to intervene.
The Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Mkhari, has welcomed the sentence.
