The Northern Cape Health Department says the 245 medical interns that it has deployed to five districts across the province will alleviate its current load.
The Health Ombudsman flagged the department last year for failing patients. This, after two mentally ill patients died. The department’s acting head, Doctor Alastair Kantani announced the deployment yesterday.
“It’s an annual allocation and placement. It fills up the gaps that we have in our system. Remember, annually we have them coming in, some going, some staying on, but we’re always excited at this time of the year because we’re getting a mean big numbers to be able to follow those empty vacant positions. We’re hoping that it always has been the experience that some of them stay or actually stay for a long time and we are able in some instances and be able to appoint them to vacant positions,’ says Kantani.
