Gavel and handcuffs.
The Molopo Regional Court in North West has convicted and sentenced 24-year-old traditional healer, Bongani Mafolela, to 15 years imprisonment for two separate sexual offences.
Mafolela was sentenced to five years for an attempted rape committed in 2024, and sentenced to 10 years for a rape committed in 2022.
The sentences will run consecutively and his name will be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.
Mafolela was sentenced for a rape he committed in February 2022 in Mahikeng. He raped his victim during an alleged cleansing ceremony, claiming to be placing muthi inside the victim’s body.
While the victim did not report the incident after Mafolela threatened her, she reported the matter to police in April 2022 after discovering she was pregnant.
Mafolela was arrested and released on bail.
While out on bail in September 2024, Mafolela was re-arrested after another victim in Mmabatho reported him to police for attempting to put muthi inside her private parts.
