The Casual Workers’ Advice Office (CWAO) has released its 2025 Strike Barometer, which shows an increase in labour-related strike action last year.
A total of 117 strikes took place across the country, which is a sharp rise from the 87 recorded in 2024.
The latest Strike Barometer covers all workplace-related strikes that took place from the 1st of January until the 31st of December 2025.
CWAO Researcher Sydney Moshoaliba says a total of 79 strikes were held in the public sector, led mainly by municipal workers.
“When you look at the public sector, you will find that these wildcat strikes, many of them, happened in the municipalities. The fact that the government has taken a posture that municipalities should generate their income through revenue collection is the main factor because there’s no support from government fiscus for municipalities. The municipalities are collapsing because they can’t run their affairs in terms of revenue,” says Moshoaliba.
