200 Barberton mine workers dispute retrenchments

More than 200 mine workers who have been retrenched by the Barberton Mines in Mpumalanga say the retrenchment process was unfair.

They claim most of the retrenched employees are locals who have been working for the mining company for many years.

They say most of the workers, who were employed two years ago, have not been retrenched.

They are now threatening to take legal action against Barberton Mines.

“The mine introduced a system known as FULCO, which led to employment of over 700 people. When they found out that their system was not working properly, they then started retrenchment processes. Most of these people who were recently hired have not been retrenched. I don’t know what I’m going to do with myself,” says a retrenched worker.

“What’s making me say it’s unfair, is the system they promised to use which is first in last out. So, they did not use that criteria,” says another retrenched employee.
