15 taxi drivers and owners interrogated after KZN taxi violence

Fifteen taxi drivers and owners have been taken in for questioning following a police operation after one e-hailing service driver was assaulted and another was shot at in KwaDabeka near Pinetown in Kwazulu Natal.

A taxi-owner who allegedly fired the shot presented himself at the police station, accompanied by his attorney.

E-hailing Council says the lack of regulation in the industry is behind recent attacks on drivers, and some e-hailing drivers say they don’t feel safe anymore.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says a number of firearms including three AK47s, were confiscated during the operation.

“Eight licensed firearms were seized from the house of one of the taxi owners and he will be charged for failure to safeguard firearms in terms of the Firearms Control Act. Four more firearms were also removed from their owners, and all 12 firearms will be taken for ballistic analysis. The situation is calm in KwaDabeka, and police maintain necessary visibility to restore order, peace and stability. Police will endeavor to convene a meeting between the taxi industry and e-hailing services to reach a consensus,” says Netshiunda.

KZN Transport and Human Settlements Spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says a high-level meeting between a taxi association and the e-hailing council will be held tomorrow morning.
