12 learners injured in scholar transport crash in Montgomery Park

Twelve learners have sustained serious injuries after a minibus they were travelling in overturned in Montgomery Park, north of Johannesburg, on Monday.

All the injured have been taken to various hospitals.

Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla says the minibus, operating as a scholar transport vehicle, crashed on Westpark Drive.

“A white minibus Toyota Quantum, operating as scholar transport, was allegedly attempting to overtake another vehicle when the driver lost control, resulting in the collision. The driver of the Toyota Quantum was found to be under the influence of alcohol. He will be detained at Sophiatown SAPS. He faces charges of reckless and negligent driving, as well as driving under the influence of alcohol.”

Earlier, several people were also injured in a crash involving seven vehicles, including a bus on the M1 near Booysens in Johannesburg. However, no fatalities have been confirmed.

It’s alleged that an altercation between a passenger and the bus driver caused the crash.

The bus driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into other vehicles in the opposing lane.
