Hand foot and mouth disease on a child’s feet.
A total of 10 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been confirmed in East London in the Eastern Cape.
The Buffalo City Metro says most of these cases have been found in primary schools and day care centres across the metro.
The affected children are between the ages of three and six years old.
The disease is a common viral infection, which mainly affects infants and children.
The spokesperson for the metro, Samkelo Ngwenya, says they are doing everything possible to ensure they contain the outbreak.
“These are mainly children and they are impacting primary schools as well crèches. Working with those who are affected we are urging parents and principals to be vigilant let us know when they pick up the symptoms. What’s important is awareness and calmness so we are able to contain this in our city.”
